Shendi Engineering Project reached a drilling depth of 10,000 meters, marking the first "Asian Depth" achieved using Chinese technology
In recent years, 60% of newly discovered global oil and gas reserves have been found in deep strata, indicating significant resource potential. China's deep and ultra-deep oil and gas reserves total 67.1 billion tonnes of oil equivalent, accounting for 34% of the country's total oil and gas resources. As a result, deep and ultra-deep formations have become the main battlefields for major oil and gas discoveries in China, making deep-earth drilling a strategic scientific and technological challenge that must be addressed. In response, Sinopec has ramped up its efforts in deep oil and gas exploration and development. By closely aligning the progress of the Shendi Engineering Project with the new energy security strategy of "Four Revolutions and One Cooperation" (energy consumption revolution, energy supply revolution, energy technology revolution, and energy system revolution, along with international cooperation), the Company has achieved major breakthroughs in deep oil and gas enrichment theory and deep earth technology. It has also established large-scale production capacity, solidifying its position as a leading force in China's deep oil and gas industry.
Shendi Engineering Project opens the door to ultra-deep oil and gas resources
Sinopec has continually strengthened its efforts in deep oil and gas exploration and development, tackling world-class challenges such as ultra-deep depth, ultra-high temperatures, and ultra-high pressure. The Shendi Engineering Project has now expanded from the deserts of Xinjiang to the Bohai Sea coast and the Sichuan–Chongqing region. At present, Sinopec has established three key bases under the Shendi Engineering Project: the Shunbei Oil and Gas Field Base, the Jiyang Shale Oil Base, and the Sichuan–Chongqing Natural Gas Base, which have made significant progress in deep and ultra-deep oil and gas exploration and development, providing strong support for national energy security and energy independence.
Scientific and technological innovation serving as a strategic tool for ultra-deep oil and gas development
Deep earth exploration involves navigating challenges such as extreme depth, high pressure, high temperatures, and high sulfur content, presenting significant challenges in exploration and extraction. In implementing the Shendi Engineering Project and excavating oil and gas resources, Sinopec's scientific research team has dedicated significant efforts to advancing deep oil and gas exploration and development. By pioneering deep marine geological theories and exploration technologies, the team has progressively mastered high-speed drilling techniques for ultra-deep wells, which has led to the development of a great quantity of key core technical equipment and enabled a transformative leap from "unable to drill" to "fast and precise drilling" for ultra-deep environments.
